2017 – Body at Peace 7 – Spartan Trials +

So I started Spartan Trials as I finish up <Totals>.  I really like the concept of working out through the day.  It keeps your head in the game and does cut down on the tendency to procrastinate.  It has really helped me.  So now on the 1st of September, I am moving on to my new challenges, as previously stated – Spartan Trials.  I feel pretty strong.  I have had to weather a couple of sprains and strains over the last few weeks – mainly back, but I feel relatively ok right now.  Still pushing forward with my virtual goad to get to OKC.  I was able to complete the trip to Benton during this phase and doing quite a bit by competing in the Garmin weekly step challenge – which I won 6 times thus far.  At any rate, feel pretty good and ready to get on with it.

(Kept from previous foreword) – Additionally, I have added a couple layers of complexity or demand to my workout.  First, I am religiously sticking to DareBee and the Daily Dare; I am also, keeping the preliminaries.  Second, I have added a consecutive component – so, starting with the end of IronBorn, I have worked consecutively.  I intend to push for 60 straight day, then see if I can get to 90.  So far I am enjoying it and my body seems to be rising to the occasion.  I caught the flu a few day before the end of the last phase – I worked through it and was back up in only a couple of days.  It appears push through and forcing my body to continue working, I was able to push the flu out of my way.  I am also continuing my virtual push to OKC via Benton.  I am really enjoying that but I will have to pick up the mileage here in the next phase as I am running out of time. Keep leaning forward.

Summary: Awesome close out workout for Spartan Trials.  Aunt Edna is back home.  Spartan Trials today is called “With Shield or on a Shield”, a repeat, is focused on squats and push ups.  Total Abs today is another repeat called “Lower Back”.  It includes lower back, side leg raises, and superman.  DD was relatively easy today again.  Pre’s were ok today again.  I got quite a bit of help with pushups and squats.  Added  7.10 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  To the moon babee!  Ciao!

Summary: Good workout day today.  My thoughts are with Aunt Edna right now tho.  Spartan Trials today is called “Body Armor”, a repeat, is focused on the abs and situps, crunches, twists, crunch kicks, leg lifts and leg circles here.  Total Abs today is another repeat called “Power Planks”.  It includes regular, elbow, raised legs, side planks.   DD was relatively easy – I like all types of Jacks.. Pre’s got some help for 2 exercises – there were no issues.  Added  7.40 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Take the leap!  Ciao!

Summary: Keep the early workout on a roll, so that we can spend some time with Uncle Frankie.  Spartan Trials today is called “Balance and Coordination”, which is a repeat, includes a series of movements – check it out here.  Total Abs today is another repeat called “Flutter Kicks”.  And just as it says just plain ol’ flutter kicking.  DD was a favorite of mine.  It has all the hallmarks of challenge and simplicity.  Beside the flutter kicks, no other exercise from the main group supported the pre’s.  Generally an all around enjoyable workout day.  Added  6.94 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Moving in the right direction!  Ciao!

Summary: Another early day workout – feels good to be finished early.  Uncle Frank is in town so I had to get my workout in early.  Spartan Trials today is called “Come and Take ’em”, which is a repeat, includes – dumbbell curls, bent over rows, punches and elbow strikes.  Total Abs today is another repeat called “Circuits”.  It includes situps, twists, butt ups, a couple of crunches and heel taps.  I really like this workout – I get a good burn from it, especially after the heel taps.  DD was a first for me.  Looked easy, but the final 10sec had me blowing.   No issues with the pre’s, not too much to blend int.  Added  7.70 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Yes, I will do it!  Ciao!

Summary: Really good and early workout today.  Uncle Frank is in town so I had to get my workout in early.  Spartan Trials today is called “Body Armor”, which is a repeat, includes – situp punches, sitting punches and leg raises for the 1st part, followed by up-down planks and regular planks for part 2.  Liked this evolution – did not feel too challenging.   Total Abs was “Lower Back”.  It includes lower back curls, superman and bridges. The first sets of curl ups and superman tend to be a bit challenging, but once the muscle get stretched out, it gets less challenging.  DD was pretty easy – I like have come to like shoulder taps; and as long as you have good core, these are easy.  While I was able to work in a couple exercises from pre’s, I had to do the bulk so.   Added  8.00 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Sky’s the limit.Ciao!

Summary: I felt the full strain of doing 2 DareBee workouts today.  ST is reaching its climax and TA is ramping up.  Now since I am pretty much at level that I want to maintain.  I will move into the single program mode at the end of ST.  I think I mentioned tha talready.  At any rate, I really felt tired today – a big part of that was because I did not get but a couple hours sleep last night.  Now let’s get on with it.  Spartan Trials today is called “HiddenStrength”,  It include – climbers, pushups, shoulder taps, squats, planks and plank into lunge (at high number they can be hard) for the 1st part.  The 2nd part is a wall sit – I held it without issue for 3 x 2min.  Total Abs was “Chopper”.  It include side-to-side chop alternating with cross chop.   DD was not too challenging.  I actually like these.  I was able to work in a few of the pre’s so that was pretty cool too.  Added  5.75 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Go get it boyee…Ciao!

Summary: Felt pretty good today.  DId much better today in getting out and getting my workout done, but it could be better.  I think – Once I am finished with this iteration of 2-program, I am gonna go back to one.  I want to keep my workout down.  Walking takes a while, but I should be able to get 5mi in daily at least.  Much of the programs for ST and TA are repeating now.   Spartan Trials today is called “Balance & Coordination and the Endurance Test”,  It include – raised leg side lunge, jump lunge and side leg raise in the first part.  The second part is a one-leg balance with eyes closed (did that for the first time – closest I have come) and arms raised endurance test.  I got to 4 mins, I could have gone on longer, but time was not my friend.  Total Abs was “Action Planks”.  I believe it was a repeat of a few days ago, but I can’t be sure; some of the exercises feel pretty familiar.  As the name implies, it was just a bunch of planking exercise  – click to see the included movements.  DD was relatively easy – like yesterday I had to do it a couple times  because I was not paying attention to detail.  No issues with pre’s.   Added  5.93 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  I won’t stop moving!…Ciao!

Summary: Much better workout today than yesterday.  I suppose a bit more rest did the job.  Spartan Trials today is called “Come and take ’em”, is another repeat of a few day ago as well.  It include a dumbbell curls, bent lateral raises and a series of arm movements.  Doing 14reps was a bit too demanding for 30lbs, so I split with 20lbs DB.  It was still a bit of a challenge, but I got through it without issue.  Total Abs was the “Circuit” repeat of a few days ago – click to see the included movements.  DD was pretty easy – leg lifts is a daily staple, but I almost messed up by breaking it up.  I caught myself so – no issue.  I was able to work in situp/crunches for pre’s so I did get a bit of help on that front.  Added  7.02 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  To the moon babee!…Ciao!

Summary: Okay workout but I felt so out of sorts.  Body just felt tired – almost felt like I was struggling.  Spartan Trials today is called “Body Armor”, a repeat of a few day ago as well.  It include a series of movements -crunches and planks.  Total Abs was also a repeat called “Circuit” – Included, lower back rotations, side leg raises and superman.  No issues with the TA but the ST really had me hurting today.    Well I did not make EC on DD today.  I thought I just had to do non-stop but EC meant 30/30.  At any rate, I don’t feel too bad because it is a hard one.  Pre’s was pretty good today.  Not much help in the exercises, but the crunches, planks and leg raises helped.  Added  6.00 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Up up and away!…Ciao!

Summary: Another good day.  Worked out early and ready to go for my road walk early.  As I am penning this I am getting ready to hit to blacktop.  I won’t be competing this week in the Garmin Step Challenge again for the second week in a row.  I think I am gonna hold off and go for 800k month in October.  We will see.   Spartan Trials today is called “Come and Take ’em”, a repeat of a few day ago.  It include 12 Dumbbell curls and bend over rows and then a series of punches and elbow strikes.  Total Abs was called “Dynamic Planks” – I really liked this series.   It consisted of plank walkout, plank saw, army crawl and pank twists.  DD was just too easy today, but I am not complaining.  I suppose my body is just getting used to stuff.  I couldn’t work too many pre’s in today, except for the planks and so I had a great day of pre’s today.  Added  6.90 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Awesome Sauce!…Ciao!

Summary: Felt pretty good today.  Started my workout kinda late, but was able to get it done before 2000hrs.  I think I am gonna start going for much earlier still – probably gradually as the winter arrives.  Spartan Trials today is called “Body Armor”, a repeat of a few day ago.  It include various ab exercises followed by 3 back related exercises – check here to see them.  Total Abs was called “Lower Back and it was really the neatest thing.  I didn’t have to redo because the 3 back related exercises from ST were the same 3 required for TA with slight variations.  I just did additional and met the more stringent requirement. DD was pretty easy and in keeping with the abs theme today and no issues with pre’s; I was able to working in quite a bit with my normal routine.   Added  6.10 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Keep moving hon!…Ciao!

Summary: At the risk of jinxing myself, I would say that I am at about 90% back right now.  Felt pretty strong today during my workout.  Spartan Trials today is called “With Shield on or On a Shield”.  It basically consisted of alternating squats with pushups.  Liked it alot – although I am not a big fan of squats, I am learning not to dread them.   Total Abs  was called “Circuit” and included:  SItups, sitting twists, reverse crunches, long arm crunches, knee to elbow crunches and heel taps. Not really jumping up about TA today, but it was aiiiight.  DD was not too challenging – I have come to like W-extensions quite a bit.  They can be challenging especially when combined with other shoulder workouts.  I was able to work in quite a bit of pre’s, so that was a great deal today.  Added  6.15 mi to my total on my way to Boise.  Pick up your stuff and let’s go!…Ciao!

Summary: The feeling is passing but my workout today went longer than I hoped it would.  Ended up going to eat out before working out – that’s a no no because I came back home and struggled to get through it due to distraction etc…  At any rate, Spartan Trials to day is called “Balance and Coordination”.  It consisted of side leg raises, side lunges, jump lunges, a one leg balance with eyes closed (I was able to do the balance but only about 10-15 seconds with eyes closed)  and finally an endurance test with arms held out to the side.  Total Abs  was called “Supernova” and included:  planks- regular, alternating leg and arm raises, 90deg movement and toe tap climbers to round it out.  DD was just too easy and pre’s was fine since I was able to work in quite a bit in the regular exercises.  Added  6.45 mi to my total on my way to OKC.  No waiting just go!…Ciao!

Summary: Okay workout day – really feel like crap.  Honestly tho, it is really not that bad.  A light cold started coming on last night, but the effects were minimal. Still feel a bit weak, need to recover with a little more meaningful sleep.  Spartan Trials, the focus was fullbody – mountain climbers, pushups, shoulder taps, squats, planks, plank lunges and wall sit to failure.  This was a monster on top of my crappy feeling but I got through it.  Totals Abs not as easy as yesterday – crunches, twists, butt=ups, leg circles and wipers; generally ran the full gamut.  DD was relatively easy, but in my current condition, it was still a slight challenge.  I pretty much was able to incorporate pre’s with the main exercises, for the exception of a couple movements.   Added  7.30 mi to my total on my way to OKC.  Just get up and go!…Ciao!

Summary: Really tough day today.  Spent all day out in the yard working to clean up the debris from Hurricane Irma.  Lots of lifting and carrying. Lot’s of raking and bagging – my muscles are screaming out.  At any rate, I have to get my workout in – my promise is my promise and I will not be stopped.  Spartan Trials, the focus was Balance and Coordination –  a bit complicated to discuss all right here (just check out ST Day 12).   Totals Abs really easy today – regular plank to elbow to plank with leg up and switch, then side elbow, then regular and elbow – repeat.  DD was really that easy, especially after a long day lugging stuff, but I got it done without issue.  No issues with pre’s wasn’t able to worked in any with the exercises from ST or TA.  Added  13.20 mi to my total on my way to OKC.  Push it good!…Ciao!

DAY 5/11 [SEP 11] – Day 160 of 200

Summary: Pretty hard because I did not get much sleep due to the hurricane last night.  Felt pretty tired and so I had to rush to make my steps count before the deadline.  Spartan Trials, the focus was Back and Biceps – dumbbell curls, renegade rows and various punches.  Totals Abs was a mix between core, back and legs – knee to elbow, cross and side chops, as well as side leg raises.  DD was relatively easy – just had to hold a pushup in the down position for 40min – I could probably do that forever (just kidding) all abs too.  No issues with pre’s just worked in a few of the exercises from ST into pre’s.  Added  7.80 mi to my total on my way to OKC.  I will do whatever it takes!…Ciao!

DAY 4/10 [SEP 10] – Day 159 of 200

Summary: Weird but ok workout day.  Tried to push for another 30k step day but got pulled off (actually had a pretty long talk with Aunt Hazel and then Phillip).  At any rate here we go – for Spartan Trials, the focus was Abs  – situps, twists and various leg lifts, along with lower back curls, superman stretches and bridges.  Totals Abs was pretty cool because coincidentally, the second part of ST was almost the same as the full requirement for TA. I just add the proper amounts and variations.  To round things off, DD was all abs too.  Took it in stride, no problem.  Finished with pre’s without issue.  Added  13.90 mi to my total on my way to OKC. Rain a fall but the duhti tuff!…Ciao!

DAY 3/9 [SEP 9] – Day 158 of 200

Summary: Pretty good workout today.  Worked ST Lv3 but it but it challenged me some – broke a sweat and all.  Want to push to another 30k+ day if possible.  If I could get it taken care of early then I could probably not have such a heavy day tomorrow.   For today’s Spartan Trials focus was total body – squats, jump squats, front kicks, then pushups , shoulder and thigh taps, a set of plank with arm raises.  Totals Abs was incredibly simple today – sit on the couch and do flutter kicks.  It was kinda easy, but since I had to do 120, the volume made up for it.  Did DD quite a bit after finishing working out, but it was not that challenging and no issues, as usual with Pre’s . I added  15.80 mi to my total on my way to OKC. Moving on up!…Ciao!

DAY 2/8 [SEP 8] – Day 157 of 200

Summary: Okay workout day.  Started to do my steps by have gotten as much done as I would like to so I am gonna hit the road.  Finished up my main routines.    For today’s Spartan Trials focus was lower body – side lunges, jump squats, side leg raises and then a blindfold balance and side arm raise for endurance. Totals Abs was planking movement out the wazooh – plank leg raises, body saw, side planks and then plank up and downs.  DD was relatively easy for me, these fly steps are pretty cool.  Pre’s were pretty cool today since I was able to work quite a bit of it into the regular section of today’s session as well.  I added  16.10 mi to my total on my way to OKC. Summary: Kinda of a weird workout day.  Felt pretty tired after getting up early and starting preps for Irma.  Ended up not getting as many steps in as I was planning to.  Have to hit 30k tomorrow.  At any rate – today’s Spartan Trials focus was on upper body with dumb belll curls and flys, followed by a series of arm movements . Totals Abs, should be no secret a series of abs focused exercises – situps, twists, crunches, lifts, etc… DD was relatively easy for me, as push ups have become a favorite of mine.  Pre’s were pretty cool today since I was able to work quite a bit of it into the regular section of today’s session.  I added  13.89 mi to my total on my way to OKC. Summary: Good day finishing up <Totals> and focusing on Spartan Trials.  Really feel good completing another goal.  Damn DareBee is truly a godsend.  It has started me on a road that is wholesome and good for me.  As I move on from <Totals> I have decided to continue with the overlapping programs.  So I am thereby adding Total Abs to ST.  I have abs work in with my pre’s so I am not really missing anything.  At any rate, today for my final day for <Total> so let me close it out in good form.  Today’s Spartan Trials focus was all Abs – situp and punch, sitting punches and leg lifts.  I also had to do up and down planks followed by 30 sec planks.  And for my final day of  <Totals>  I had to do 100 burpee.  It took a while, but I got it done and felt really accomplished. Could get out too much for my walk, so I had to hit the treadmill to mix it up a bit.  I added  0.0 mi to my total on my way to OKC. If it’s gonna be, it is up to me…Ciao!

Distance:  27.30 + 12.20  = 39.50 (LA-OK Run: 1105.02)

Summary: Started early workout today with timings.  I think I will be working on this technique this week and see how it goes.  I have completed all my main workout, but still need to do my walk/step count.   Today’s Spartan Trials focus was thighs and chest –  squats and a push ups.   <Totals>  and tomorrow will be my final day, in the same vein as ST – lunges, plank leg raises, mountain climbers, side leg raises.  DD again was not that challenging in terms of effort but having to do it while my body is cold presents another type of challenge.  I added  12.20 mi to my total on my way to OKC. DAY 4/28 [SEP 4] – Day 153 of 200
Distance:  19.30 + 8.0  = 27.30 (LA-OK Run: 1093.42)
Cardio (Mixed: Road/Steps): 8.0 @ 87.00 min (Back on the road again)
Daily Dares : 400 Backfists
Summary: Not a bad workout day.  Went outside to do my exercises and then actually for my walk.  Today’s Spartan Trials focus was – a weird amalgamation of lunges, deep lunges, knee raises, knee presses and balance stand. I have never put together anything like this, but I liked it nonetheless.  <Totals> today was all planks – plank leg raises, plank body saw, plank crunches and side plank rotations.   DD was not that challenging in terms of effort but it took a while to get through.  I wasn’t able to work in much with pre’s but no worries, I did get a bit of the planks in.  I added  8.00 mi to my total on my way to OKC. DAY 3/27 [SEP 3] – Day 152 of 200
Distance:  11.5 + 7.80  = 19.30 (LA-OK Run: 1085.42)
Cardio (Mixed: Treadmill/Steps): 7.80 @ 68.00 min (Hit the treadmill)
Daily Dares : 60 Sec Plank Punches
Summary: Sort of a different workout today.  It dragged a bit, but I combined my totals and ST together and completed them, however, I started and stopped my pre’s and that kinda made it drag.  Today’s Spartan Trials focus was – Back and Biceps – dumbbell curls and bent over rows followed by a series of punches.   <Totals> today was upperbody as well but focused on pushups (80) and punches (300).  I cannot remember completing as many as 80 pushups at once in a row and if I have it must have been a long time ago.  DD as yesterday was not that challenging and I ended up doing pre’s at the end with no issue.  Since I had an early start, the sun was too hot, so I completed my walk-run on the treadmill.  I added  7.80 mi to my total on my way to OKC. DAY 2/26 [SEP 2] – Day 151 of 200
Distance:  6.0 + 5.50  = 11.50 (LA-OK Run: 1077.62)
Cardio (Mixed: Road/Steps): 5.50 @ 78.00 min (Got out early today no issues..)
Daily Dares : 200 Overhead Punches
Summary: Pretty slow day so far.  Both programs were not that demanding, but I am about the head out for my walk/steps.  Today’s Spartan Trials focus was – Abs – crunches and planks to be exact.  <Totals> today was a whole bunch of variations on the Jack theme – jumping, seal and half, along will elbow to knees; had to do 60 of each types.  DD  was pretty easy, doubled up on it to add a bit of challenge.  No issues with pre’s, but was able to work in quite a bit with the regular focus areas above.  Added  5.50 mi to my total on my way to OKC. Not looking back now!…Ciao!

DAY 1/25 [SEP 1] – Day 150 of 200
Distance:  0 + 6.0  = 6.0 (LA-OK Run: 1072.12)
Cardio (Mixed: Road/Steps): 6.0 @ 61.00 min (Got dark on me – female unit went berserk)

Summary: Wow! Make the move to another challenge and incorporating <Totals> in it. This is sort of a rush log, I did not do such a good job closing out last,but it is the beginning of the month and all types of obligations are gnawing at me right now.  Today’s I started the Spartan Trials program.  Today’s focus was – leg (squats, jump squats and kicks ) and upperbody – (pushups forever, leg lift planks and a new move – plank into lunge).  The plank into lunge was awkward, but I kinda liked it; I will need to get more practice.   <Totals> today was more of the same squats (80), lunges (80), side leg raises (80) and jump squats (40).  Yep today, as if that wasn’t enough, DD was a 3min wall sit.  Needless to say, my legs go a good run.  I am not actively competing in the Garmin week step comp, but I am still meeting my 12k min,so that’s cool.  Added  6.0 mi to my total on my way to OKC. Not taking it easy yet!…Ciao!
