5 Mistakes Parents Make With Teens and Tweens

5 Mistakes Parents Make With Teens and Tweens

Here are the top mistakes parents make with their teens and tweens, and how to avoid them.

Things aren’t the way they used to be. Your 12-year-old no longer comes to you first when she feels hurt or disappointed. When your son misses curfew — again — the time-out corner that used to work wonders is now simply, lame. As your child grows into adolescence, you need to adapt your tried-and-true parenting skills to a rapidly changing world.

As tempting as it might seem, don’t throw away everything you know about your child — or yourself as a parent. Your teenager may seem like a stranger in your home, but behind the slammed doors and mood swings, she is still your child. You will face many unknowns in the years ahead. What you can expect is that your limits will be tested and your patience will, at times, wear thin. Here are the top mistakes parents make with their teens and tweens, and how to avoid them.

My Comments:
I can’t believe that my son is getting older and is now in his tween years.  In a couple of week he will be 12 years old…oh boy! it seemed as if it were yesterday when I first held him in my arms.  That tiny bundle of joy that brought so much love to my heart.  I love him so much.  I only hope that I can be a worthy parent to guide him toward a good path in life.  To be a strong, responsible, caring and truthful man.  I ask for understanding from the Most High…I ask for  guidance.

Does 35lbs Lighter Makes A Difference?

Does 35lbs Lighter Makes A Difference?

I ran across this image a few days ago while looking for a feature image for a posting here at my site.  I was simply amazed to see the difference that the form of body can play upon the eyes.  Now, the before picture seen in isolation would probably not come across as too much out of the ordinary.  For some, it would be – heh! she has a few folds, slightly on the heavy side, but not bad.

When placed next to the more toned body, the differences teases the eyes a bit more and does highlight a more improve shape that ultimately is a bit more pleasing to look at.

am just sayin’!

Child Brides…Really?

Child Brides…Really?

Click graphic to read

I do understand that traditions play an important part in the lives of all cultures sharing this planet we call Earth; very few things , however, boils my blood…nay pisses me off than the abuse of another individual in the name of tradition.  Invariably those abused are the weakest and most defenseless among us - our children, our poor, illiterate and less fortunate.

I came across this site about  “Child Brides“, after reading another story that was a consequence of a young woman, from Somalia, that had developed a serious condition called Fistula, and as a result divorced by her husband and shone.  The story was very hard for me to read (I don’t do well with graphic stuff), but paints the struggle and suffering inherent in practices such as child marriages.

It is friggin’ unbelievable to me that in this age of knowlege, how or why we still condone crap like this.  I know, and do understand the ironclad defenses that are put up around these societies to keep knowledge at bay.  The men and some of the brainwashed women of these societies feed an ample supply of constant ignorance and superstition to perpetuate these outrageous practices only to feed these nasty and devious desires.

While not the end all, I sincerely believe that education can play a key role in these practices; because only in naked ignorance can these transgressions prevail.

Somalia Famine Finally Captures the News Cycle

Somalia Famine Finally Captures the News Cycle

Today’s New York Times devotes two-thirds of its front page above the fold to a horrific picture in color of a malnourished Somali child in a Mogadishu hospital. It caps a detailed and thoughtful report by Jeffrey Gettleman titled “Somalis Waste Away as Insurgents Block Escape from Famine.” The New York Times‘ lead story continued to be the U.S. debt-ceiling crisis and the House vote yesterday to raise the debt ceiling.  But the Somalia story visually dominates the paper today. Now that the debt ceiling drama is winding down, I suspect U.S. public attention, rightfully prodded by humanitarian agencies, will focus on the famine.

And, in effect, Al Shabab bears the most responsibility for the famine. The terrorist group continues to block Western aid workers during a drought that has displaced close to two million people, or a quarter of Somalia’s entire population. A few years ago, Shabab dismantled a child vaccination campaign, claiming it was a Western plot; that program could have saved many children who have since succumbed to measles. Gettleman also reports that Shabab is preventing starving people from fleeing the areas that it controls.

HIV epidemics emerging in Middle East, North Africa: study

The study showed that the HIV infection rate among homosexual men exceeded 5% in Egypt, Sudan and Tunisia

Epidemics of HIV are emerging among gay and bisexual men in the Middle East and North Africa and high levels of risky sexual behavior threaten to spread the AIDS virus further in the region, researchers said Tuesday.

In the first study of its kind in a region where homosexuality and bisexuality are taboo, researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar found evidence for concentrated HIV epidemics — where infection rates are above 5 percent in a certain population group — in several countries such as Egypt, Sudan, Pakistan and Tunisia.

In one setting in Pakistan, HIV rates reached up to 28 percent, they said in a study in the Public Library of Science (PLoS) Medicine journal.

Rupe’s Year of the Body: PhII-Day 54(W3) – C/A

Sort of a soft abs day.  Did add quite a few reps, but the intensity was not typical.  I kinda sense a bit of sluggishness creeping into my game.  A part of it has to do with being out for a week, but I need to kick it up a notch, bearing in mind that I am coming off of an injury; the last thing I want to do now is go right into another injury.

Can chewing more help you eat less?

Can chewing more help you eat less?

A new study finds that people who chew their food more take in fewer calories, which may help them control their weight.

Chewing food 40 times instead of a typical 15 times caused study participants to eat nearly 12 percent fewer calories, according to results published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Jie Li and colleagues from Harbin Medical University in China gave a typical breakfast to 14 obese young men and 16 young men of normal weight to see if there were differences in how they chewed their food. The researchers also looked to see whether chewing more would lead subjects to eat less and would affect levels of blood sugar or certain hormones that regulate appetite.

Countdown To 7 Billion: A Tale Of Two Worlds

The United Nations says that sometime around Halloween the seven-billionth person will be born into this world — most likely in India, which is on track to overtake China as the most populous nation in just 16 years.

This latest milestone may not come as a surprise. But it is remarkable nonetheless. It took Earth 50,000 years to reach the one billion mark. By 1960 there were three billion souls. Since then we’ve added another billion every decade, or less.

When the baby boomers’ grandchildren reach middle age, they’ll share the planet with more than nine billion people.

My Comments:
Really sobering data on world population growth.  Not all doom and gloom though, but it shows that a lot of things have to come together in order for things not to go from bad to worse.  Well, what can you say about the Indians…damn, they must have a lot of free time on their hands…go ahead India…with your bad self.

Putting an Antebellum Myth to Rest

Putting an Antebellum Myth to Rest

Was slavery an idyllic world of stable families headed by married parents? The recent controversy over “The Marriage Vow,” a document endorsed by the Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, might seem like just another example of how racial politics and historical ignorance are perennial features of the election cycle.

The vow, which included the assertion that “a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American President,” was amended after the outrage it stirred.

Princeton University has a warm spot in my heart.  It is one of the most progressive institution on the history of African Americans.  It boasts some of the foremost minds of the day on the topic, chief among them, a mentor of min – Dr. Cornel West.  Harvard is ok, but I think Princeton is first rate.  Regarding this piece, it is slightly long, but I think this is a great read. It shows how misinformed and self-serving some folks are when it comes to our history.  Really recommend you slog through it…it’s not that bad.

The Secret to Building Wealth Most People Ignore

The Secret to Building Wealth Most People Ignore

One of the reasons I believe most people never succeed at reaching financial independence is because they make things too complicated. They invest in elaborate investments they don’t understand, but heard some guy on television screaming to “buy, buy, buy!” They make fancy moves with their money, like taking out a second mortgage on their home to put down on a vacation home for the additional “tax benefits.”

All the highly technical, overly complicated wealth-building advice in the world can be boiled down to four words, that if followed will practically guarantee financial independence to those who follow:

“Buy Assets, Avoid Liabilities”

That’s it. Simply buy assets. Buy things that increase in value. Buy things that produce income. Avoid spending money earned in exchange for work on anything other than assets.  Click source link below to finish reading.

Men Confess to Wearing Dirty Undies

Men Confess to Wearing Dirty Undies

Women all over the world have suspected the truth, but now the dirty laundry secret is out – many men DO wear the same pair of underwear more than once in a week.

The Clorox Company recently conducted a survey around the laundry habits of both men and women, and one in eight men came clean to wearing their underpants two to three times before tossing them in the washing machine. Men in the survey also confessed to using a “sniff” test to see if they could get away with wearing other elements of their wardrobe again before washing.

Women, on the other hand, admitted to simply buying MORE underwear to avoid having to wash so often.

Tell Us What You Think
Are you guilty of wearing the same underwear or other garments more than once a week? Do you think there is a downside to the “sniff” test or is it all good? We promise not to tell!

My Comments:
I am totally offended and very upset by this article.   I have no idea what these people are talking about.  Seriously…why don’t you believe me.  I cannot remember if I have ever conducted the sniff test on any of my garments.  So there you go,  if I can’t remember, then it never happened…right?  Check out what Rita said in response to the questions at Web MD link below.

The Vitamin that Protects Your Brain

Sure, you drink your orange juice and eat your vegetables (sometimes). But one in 10 men are still vitamin C deficient, according to the Centers for Disease Control. And unexpected new research shows vitamin C may play an important role in proper brain function and health.

A team of Oregon-based researchers found that the retina cells in the back of the eye become overtaxed—and slowly burn out—when denied proper amounts of vitamin C.

Relaxing and Staying Cool!

Relaxing and Staying Cool!

Well, not really….

So last Friday, at command PT we had soccer on the menu.  Being a fervent  soccer fan myself, I just could not wait to get out there and show a few moves from by old bag of tricks.

Well my friend, I did make a valiant attempt, heck the great Pele would even be proud of me, but then Mr. Reality came knocking; and while the good ol’ body did not want to listen, there was no keeping Mr. Reality’s check at bay.  So if you read my post of a week ago, you would have learned that I sprained my left upper leg, both thigh and hamstring, and was laid up for the entire weekend with alternating hot and cold compresses.

Coming out of the weekend, I was hoping that I would feel fine to continue my daily workout, but suffice it to say…that was not even near possible.; as a result, I decided to take the whole week off – you know,  get the  body back to good,  and while at it keep out of the heat.  Damn its been hot these last few day.

So tomorrow (Saturday)  I will go for a light run around my neighborhood to get the muscle back up, nothing stressful and then back to the weights on Monday.  Wish me luck.

Woman faces trial for fake testicles

Woman faces trial for fake testicles

The police chief of a small South Carolina town will ask a jury to decide if a woman broke the state’s obscenity laws by driving a pickup truck with plastic testicles hanging from the back.

Bonneau Police Chief Franco Fuda ticketed Virginia Tice, 65, in early July at a local convenience store after spying the adornment dangling from her truck.

South Carolina law considers a bumper sticker, decal or device indecent when it describes, in an offensive way as determined by contemporary community standards, “sexual acts, excretory functions, or parts of the human body.”

The offense carries a maximum fine of $445 but no jail time, Fuda said.

“This is certainly not a staple of my ticket writing in Bonneau,” the police chief told Reuters on Wednesday.

The Charleston law firm Savage & Savage will represent Tice for free, attorney Scott Bischoff said. The trial had been scheduled for next week but was delayed because the defendant will be out of town.

DoD panel calls for radical retirement overhaul

DoD panel calls for radical retirement overhaul

A sweeping new plan to overhaul the Pentagon’s retirement system would give some benefits to all troops and phase out the 20-year cliff vesting system that has defined military careers for generations.

In a massive change that could affect today’s troops, the plan calls for a corporate-style benefits program that would contribute money to troops’ retirement savings account rather than the promise of a future monthly pension, according to a new proposal from an influential Pentagon advisory board.

All troops would receive the yearly retirement contributions, regardless of whether they stay for 20 years. Those contributions might amount to about 16.5 percent of a member’s annual pay and would be deposited into a mandatory version of the Thrift Savings Plan, the military’s existing 401(k)-style account that now does not include government matching contributions.  Read the full article by clicking the source link below.

My Comments:
Hmmm….the jury is still out for me on this.  I have lots a questions as to how benefits would be distributed.  I understand, however, that eventually, it might have to come down to this…I am not looking forward to that day for my fellow brothers in arms.

How to Approach Any Woman

How to Approach Any Woman

A new study in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin confirms what everyone who went to high school already knows: Attractive, strong guys are more likely to be extroverts.

Good-looking men and women are often rewarded with extra attention from an early age, which causes them to seek more of it as they get older and adapt it into their personalities, researchers explain. Being physically stronger also significantly predicts extroversion in men, says lead study author Aaron Lukaszewski, Ph.D., a post-doctoral scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.  Continue reading

Richer Countries Have Higher Depression Rates:   Study Shows U.S. Has World’s Second Highest Depression Rate

Depression rates around the world vary according to a nation’s affluence, with the highest income countries — including the U.S. — reporting the highest levels of depression, a study shows.

For the study, an international team working with the World Health Organization’s World Mental Health Survey Initiative interviewed nearly 90,000 people in eighteen countries. The researchers assessed their mental health using criteria for major depressive episode (MDE).

The study is published in BMC Medicine.
The World Health Organization estimates that depression affects 121 million people worldwide. In the 10 higher income countries surveyed, an average of nearly 15% of the population had suffered from depression at least once in their lives. By contrast, people living in low to middle income countries reported an 11% likelihood of having had the disease.

At 19.2%, the U.S. had the second highest lifetime rate of depression. Only France, at 21%, had a greater frequency of the disease. Among the high-income countries, Japan, Germany, Italy, and Israel reported the smallest percentages, ranging from under 7% to 10%.

Going Through the Emotions

Going Through the Emotions

The world can be a beautiful place, full of possibilities and life. You can feel invincible and in control. But it’s not always like that, is it? The world can also be a stressful, upsetting, confidence-crushing place. At times, it seems like even something as clear-cut as weight loss is harder than it really needs to be. Is it worth the trouble, you ask. Why am I banging my head against the wall? Is it really doing any good?

You’re darned right it is!

When life and your mind are full of troubles, when things seem out of control, you’ve got to take control of what you can. When confidence is low, that’s exactly when you need to be at your healthiest, your strongest, your most energetic. There’s no better time to create your own little corner of sanity and positive feeling. The best way you can do that is to stick with those small daily weight loss goals.

To People Who Haven’t Saved Anything Yet

To People Who Haven’t Saved Anything Yet

Author: Carl Richards of The New York Times

We often hear about the importance of starting to save early. Usually the examples are focused on saving whatever you can when you’re in your 20s to take advantage of the power of compound interest.

But what if you were too busy trying to pay a student loan and other bills in your 20s, or like many of us, had to use all the savings you built up to get through the last few years? Now you find yourself closing in on 40 and feeling like you missed the boat.

I’ve thought about this problem ever since I read about the recent study that found that nearly half of Americans wouldn’t be able to come up with $2,000 in 30 days if they needed it. This reality hits home every time I have a conversation with people 35 to 45 who feel so far behind the savings game that they aren’t sure what to do.

For that group the advice is no longer start early, but simply start now. The only thing that matters at this point is that the longer you wait, the more painful it will be. Compound interest can still work, but not until you start saving.  Continue reading….

Rupe’s Year of the Body: PhII-Day 52(F22) – Soccer

So today I decided to play a bit of soccer, in lieu of my typical workout.  Now, this is the first time I have played soccer in quite a while and it was sort of ok.  Why sort of?…well, I have had pretty tight upper left leg muscles  for some time now, and have been meaning to go get a deep tissue massage to work out the knots.

Well, I did not get around to it,  and so today I pulled my upper thigh muscles.  Yep, it  was quite silly of me in doing this.  No only have my left muscles been buggin’ me, today I did not even get a good stretch before getting on the pitch.

At any rate, I hit it with an icepack, took some motrin and then I will try to get a pretty deep massage later.   Needless to say I will have to take it easy on the leg this weekend and rest it up.

Oh My Lion!!!

Oh My Lion!!!

Okay, I am not one to be too overly excited about much, but when it comes to my MacBook , IMac, IPOD or IPAD,  I must shamelessly admit, I simply cannot get enough.  Why am I so big on the Mac platform, let me give you a bit.

I purchased my first Mac platform, my MacBook, in December 2006; it was sort of a Christmas gift for myself.   Now, I had been a total Windows PC guy up to that time, but after I purchased my MacBook, I have not looked back and I don’t see how I could ever go back to using a Windows platform.

It has now been 5 years since I made the switch and I am a total Mac convert – hook-line-and-sinker.  Don’t get me wrong, I am not a rediculous Mac Fanboy, I don’t even like the way that sounds, but I have been totally pleased with everything Apple that I have used – both hardware and software-wise.

So here we are now.  Mac’s latest operating system – “Lion” – is now out, and sure enough, I am just behind one of the leading-edge installers.  I installed Lion last night.  I haven’t had a chance to really take it for a good spin yet, but from the early signs, it will go the way of the past.  I already know alredy that I will not be disappointed.

On the financial front, I wish I had stopped and given a look at Apple’s stock years ago, but then again, hindsight is 20/20.  I decided to re-organize my portfolio at the start of the year, as a part of my year review and pick up some apple stocks.  Well, lets put it this way, I am very please at the trajectory that the stock is on.  I would very much recommend a buy, especially after the news on Tuesday that they doubled their net profit quarter over quarter from roughly $3.5B to $7.2B.

Bottomline – don’t even think about get Samsung, HP or any of the other wanna beat Mac.  just give in and go Mac – resistance my friends is futile.
