You are Making Her Fat (What the…?)

We know you mean well when you tell a fat friend or family member to stay away from the Oreos and Fritos, but new Yale University research suggests that the advice could backfire and lead to more weight gain.

After overweight women watched a stigmatizing video, they consumed three times as many calories as those who watched a neutral video. Researchers expect the same would happen to men.

“Using food to cope is common strategy for people who face weight stigma from multiple sources—whether it be from TV shows, coworkers, or family members,” says lead study author Natasha Schvey, M.S., graduate student at Yale University.

Give me a friggin’ break already…are you freakin’ kiddin’ me?!!  Alright, don’t get me wrong or think Iam going out of my way on some insensitive rant here (well…maybe a little bit), but the last thing that anyone should blame someone else for, is the expansion of their a@@  and gut due to over gorging themselves and not working out or at least taking responsibility for it.  Like I have said in previous posts, I do understand that there might be genetic and/or medical reasons for fatness, but it is all too often used, and I make no apologies for this, as a friggin’ crutch.  Most, and I emphasize the word “MOST”, obese or overweight people do little to no physical activity – that is a FACT; it doesn’t matter whether the chicken came before the egg or not, the bottom line is – if you are fat and you eat like a horse but don’t move like one, then my friend expect to grow the girth.

And lastly to my fellow American brothers and sisters – and I mean that literally – WTF???!

According to the Office of Minority Health – roughly 3 out of  every 4 black male are overweight to obese; and not to be outdone, 4 out of every 5 sisters are in the same condition… we are killing ourselves yo…stop it!

Why am I so worked up over this…?  I have done the freaking experiment personally and it is alarming true.  Think am kidding…? the next time you are in a public place – mall, movie theater, Burger King, whatever!…count for yourself.  I guarantee it; you will not be surprised.

How to Eliminate Muscle Cramps

How to Eliminate Muscle Cramps

Muscle cramps can be a very painful side effect of exercise. You work out to benefit your body and overall health, and are punished with a sharp pain in your muscles. It’s easy to get frustrated and even apprehensive when a “charley horse” occurs, but they are usually harmless and there are several tricks to help alleviate the pain.

Cramps occur when a muscle contracts and doesn’t relax. They are involuntary and you can often see or feel your muscle twitching. Even after the muscle does relax, it will remain fatigued and possibly sore. Cramps can last anywhere from a few seconds to 25 minutes or more. While some people experience cramps during exercise, they can also happen while sitting or even sleeping. They most commonly occur in the leg, especially in the calf, hamstring and quadricep.

Why me?
There are many reasons why cramps may occur. Inadequate stretching and overexertion might lead to a build up of lactic acid in your muscles. Muscle fatigueand dehydration may also contribute. Cramps are also more likely to happen in hot weather since you tend to lose more fluids.

How does Psychotherapy Works

How does Psychotherapy Works

Most patients think that they sign up for psychotherapy and they go in and talk in order to “vent” their feelings. Others think they are going it to see a counselor (like a lawyer or financial advisor) who will tell them what to do and how to behave.

Some of this is true. Venting your feelings or “getting it all out” in a safe environment may be helpful in cases of grief where a loved one has died, but I have also met patients who have had therapists where they have been venting every week for seven years… and they still aren’t better. So venting is part of the process in some cases. Some therapists will tell you what to do and how to behave, but this may not be a hallmark of a good therapist. Good therapists work with you in hopes that you see better ways to behave, interact, and function and act on those in your own way.

Below are some concepts that govern certain types of psychotherapy. Yes, just like there are several types of medications that work in several different ways, there are different types and styles of psychotherapy:

This is one area that I confess that I know very little about.  It can be frustrating because operating from a point of view (and I have done so) that each person should have control over his or her faculties can blind one to the mental pains of others.  Interesting comments at the site.

Middle-aged women happier with moderate exercise

Middle-aged women happier with moderate exercise

Middle-aged women encouraged to exercise at moderate intensity were much happier and more likely to continue working out than peers who exercised more intensely, according to a study.

Researchers led by Steriani Elavsky of Penn State University in Pennsylvania recruited 255 women between 40 and 60 years old to do either moderate or vigorous exercise, then followed the volunteers to monitor their reactions.

Overall, women who did moderate exercise were about twice as likely to feel energized and confident they could do more exercise in the future, and more of them also showed decreased feelings of sadness and anxiety than the vigorous-exercise group.

Pretty good incentive for women, and men for that matter, to keep a healthy exercise regiment as an integral part of their lives.

Where Stress Hides

Where Stress Hides

The best explanation of stress we’ve ever heard comes from Stanford neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky, Ph.D., the author of Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers. “If you are a normal mammal,” he says, “stress is the 3 minutes of screaming terror on the savanna after which either it’s over with or you’re over with.”

If you’re a human mammal, however, stress comes from something more insidious than a toothy predator: anxiety triggered by the passive-aggressive boss, the 30-year mortgage, and the job of caring for children as well as the ill parent who believes General MacArthur wants him to lead a division into Pyongyang Province.

No wildebeest would understand these fears, but the perceived threats spark the same physiological survival responses that crocodile attacks do. Here’s where modern stress bites your body and how to fight back.

What Every Woman Wants

What Every Woman Wants

Ask a group of ladies what they look for in a man, and buzzwords fly. Confidence. Independence. Humor. Kindness. Looks. It’s as if we women are all seeking the exact same guy. (Hot damn—lucky dude.)

But here’s the rub: We reorder these priorities depending on where we are in our lives.

“What a woman looks for in a partner changes as she ages,” says Helen Fisher, Ph.D., a professor of anthropology at Rutgers University and a relationship expert, whose most recent book is Why Him? Why Her?

So if you want a decent shot at success, you have to recognize what she values at this stage of her life—and know what to expect if you plan to stay with her. A woman who once prioritized, say, grinding to Lil’ Wayne on the dance floor will eventually start to prefer intimate conversation accompanied by a glass of Barolo and a plate of homemade Bolognese.
