Some people make dieting resolutions in the New Year. I make security and privacy resolutions, because those are the things that keep me up at night. After all, as a journalist, it’s important for me to give my sources assurances that I will keep their communications confidential. And in today’s world, that is an ever-more-difficult task.

WordPress security is often referred to as “hardening.” Makes sense. After all, the process is like adding reinforcements to your castle. It’s all about bolstering the gates and putting lookouts on every tower. But that term doesn’t always allow you to realize the details that go into improving site security.

Skype, Microsoft’s voice over IP software, has been shown to be insecure on various levels over the years. The Snowden leaks have revealed it to be more of a mass surveillance malware than a secure communications platform.

25,000 complaints. That’s the number the FBI-affiliated Internet Crime Complaint Center registers each month. Whether it’s identity theft, financial fraud or outright scams, we are all potential victims. So what can you do? Gary McAlum, USAA’s chief security officer, offers five tips.
Build a Wall
The holy trinity of computer security is a firewall, anti-malware software and automatic updates. Chances are you have all of these installed on your machine. Modern computers and routers have firewalls built in, and you can download an anti-malware program online, but whichever one you choose, be sure to keep it up-to-date. (USAA offers a discount for the McAfee® security suite, and numerous free options are available, but beware of “look-alike” programs that can actually harm your computer.) Finally, keep all your applications and your operating system secure by installing updates.

Okay, I am not one to be too overly excited about much, but when it comes to my MacBook , IMac, IPOD or IPAD,  I must shamelessly admit, I simply cannot get enough. Why am I so big on the Mac platform, let me give you a bit.Â
I purchased my first Mac platform, my MacBook, in December 2006; it was sort of a Christmas gift for myself.  Now, I had been a total Windows PC guy up to that time, but after I purchased my MacBook, I have not looked back and I don’t see how I could ever go back to using a Windows platform.
It has now been 5 years since I made the switch and I am a total Mac convert – hook-line-and-sinker. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a rediculous Mac Fanboy, I don’t even like the way that sounds, but I have been totally pleased with everything Apple that I have used – both hardware and software-wise.Â
So here we are now. Mac’s latest operating system – “Lion” – is now out, and sure enough, I am just behind one of the leading-edge installers. I installed Lion last night. I haven’t had a chance to really take it for a good spin yet, but from the early signs, it will go the way of the past. I already know alredy that I will not be disappointed.Â
On the financial front, I wish I had stopped and given a look at Apple’s stock years ago, but then again, hindsight is 20/20. I decided to re-organize my portfolio at the start of the year, as a part of my year review and pick up some apple stocks. Well, lets put it this way, I am very please at the trajectory that the stock is on. I would very much recommend a buy, especially after the news on Tuesday that they doubled their net profit quarter over quarter from roughly $3.5B to $7.2B.Â
Bottomline – don’t even think about get Samsung, HP or any of the other wanna beat Mac. just give in and go Mac – resistance my friends is futile.
